Black Barn Restaurant

BLACK BARN RESTAURANT  | 19 E 26TH ST, PH: 212 265 5959

Black Barn is a locally sourced, upscale American cuisine restaurant (farm to table) in a beautiful “chic” barn inspired setting.  Basically, it’s artisanal food in the comfort of a modern barn, by the brilliant Chef John Doherty and Tom Struzzieri. EVERY SINGLE DETAIL of this restaurant has been carefully thought out from the music, decor, table settings, utensil holders, napkins, fresh farm ingredients, locally sourced sea salt to the aesthetics and layout. This restaurant is huge, with private rooms upstairs for entertaining and a jaw dropping wine cellar. Even though there is so much space, it’s designed to make you feel comfortable and right at home. It’s casual, it’s cool, the crowd consisted of young working professionals + couples + friend groups/ coworkers and families. Now let’s get to my favorite part, the food. Black Barn offers a Chef’s Table experience, which is a front-row view of all the action in the kitchen with 5 courses and wine pairing for $150 per person. That is one of the most affordable special dining experiences in the city. After speaking to Chef John, it was very important for his restaurant to be accessible and not over priced. He wants his guests to love the food and experience so much that they become returning clients, and eventually “ food family”. His motto is simple, “Great food, wonderful service, beautiful atmosphere and doesn’t kill your wallet.” No wonder why Black Barn is becoming one of the hottest restaurants in Gramercy, and NYC.

A few months ago I got to experience the true Chef’s Table with some food writers and blogger babes, it was such an incredible experience. I wanted to come back on my own, and really try the restaurant on one of NYC’s busiest nights… a typical New York Thursday. I sat at a table in the main barn room, and couldn’t believe how packed it was. Every single table was filled. I told Chef to cook whatever he wanted, I knew that every plate would be a party in my mouth.  Even their bread basket was something to be discussed, not to mention the truffle glazed butter!

We started out with a beautiful tuna tar tar paired with KUMEU RIVER Pinot Gris, followed by a delicious Kale and bacon salad. If only my salads tasted that good, I would eat it everyday. The salad’s flavors were warm, yummy sweet potatoes, spices and smoky palettes. Next came the most delicious truffle scallops (probably the best I have ever had, and that’s a bold statement).  I really enjoyed the 2009 Capbern Gasqueton & 2015 Gruner Veltliner wines. Our main was totally off the charts, a wild boar ravioli truffle butter and parsnips plate. I can't even begin to describe the flavors, the pasta itself was homemade and so fresh, the parmesan was de-lish and the meat inside was tender and juicy.  I literally died and went to heaven on that one. Lastly, our meal ended with a caramelized + salted homemade turtle and peanut butter ice cream sundae. Basically, you had to roll me out of there.

It was one of the best dining experiences, and Chef was kind enough to bring me back to his kitchen where all of the magic happens. I even got to meet the fab pastry chef who was also working her magic on the most beautiful deserts.
The best part about Chef John Doherty (besides his killer chef skills in the kitchen), is his heart. Chef is extremely passionate about feeding children and ending hunger. Black Barn recently held a charity dinner on Tuesday, November 14, 2017, in Nomad, to raise funds to feed families in need, especially those affected by the recent disasters. Their goal was to raise enough money to make 34,000 meals. Through everyone's generosity, they got up to  50,000 meals!!!! How amazing is that?!?!
